How Would You Like to Use the Room?
Begin by picturing what you would most enjoy doing in the space:

- Spending time with family
- Dining or entertaining
- Hobbies, games, or working from home
- Enjoying the outdoors without insects or uncomfortable weather
- Creating a comfortable place for pets to enjoy sunlight and outdoor views
- Having a flexible space that can adapt to different uses over time
Also think about when you want to enjoy the room. A three-season room extends your enjoyment of the outdoors through much of the year. A year-round room uses a thermally broken building system and can be heated and cooled for comfortable use in every season.

Think of Your Sunroom as a Room in Your Home
Most homeowners do not use their entire existing deck or patio for a sunroom. Instead, the room is carefully sized and designed to fit the home and yard.
A room around 12 × 14 feet—or approximately 168 square feet—is one of the most common and popular sizes. It provides comfortable space for relaxing, dining, or spending time with family while preserving some of the surrounding outdoor area.
As you begin thinking about size, consider:

Your sunroom will be attached to the house. The area may currently be a deck, patio, porch, slab, or open space beside your home.

- How the sunroom should relate to your home and surrounding yard
